![]() We expect that to change soon, as Volvo offers PHEV variants of its XC60 and XC90 crossovers, the S60 and S90 sedans and the V60 wagon. Volvo has not yet outlined plans to bring the XC40 PHEV to our shores. In 2018, Volvo announced that the XC40 would be the first car in its lineup to go full-electric, and we expect to see specs on that offering before the end of the year. This is where the ICE variant of the XC40 T5 actually has an advantage over the PHEV: It's available with all-wheel drive. In this instance, Volvo mounted it in the XC40's battery in the tunnel beneath the compartment, where a shaft would normally route power to the rear wheels in an all-wheel drive configuration. Like most modern hybrids, the XC40 PHEV's battery pack is mounted just outside of the passenger and cargo areas, and occupying space otherwise needed for components in gasoline versions. Volvo claims up to 28.6 miles of all-electric range in the somewhat more optimistic WLTP cycle, so it's likely EPA range would be significantly more than 20 miles. 2020 Volvo XC60 Specificationsĭrivetrain: 2.These produce a total system output of approximately 260 horsepower, just besting the turbo-4 in the regular T5. There’s nothing wrong with the XC60 that an easier-to-use center screen wouldn’t fix. Otherwise, this is a nice-driving, high-quality, good-looking crossover. Sensus remains a Volvo deal-breaker for me. Sadly, most of the car’s adjustments are accomplished through swiping your way around the screen. And more than once, the screen didn’t respond immediately to my inputs, requiring several stabs at whatever icon I wanted to function. The simplest operation-say, turning on a heated seat or switching the radio from AM to FM-takes too much attention away from the road. Sensus looks elegant and is well-integrated, I’ll give Volvo that, but it’s far too complicated. There’s a caveat, however, and a big one: Sensus, the iPad-style center screen, remains maddening to me, even now that I’ve had more experience with it and even though Volvo claims the resolution is better and the processor 50 percent faster. Volvo says 60 mph arrives in about 6.5 seconds, and really, do you need your Volvo crossover any quicker? No, you need your Volvo crossover to be good-looking, well-built and comfortable on the road. The car is adequately quick off the line and in the middle revs. I put a lot of miles over a couple weeks in a XC60 T6 Inscription, and indeed, the T6’s lag is minimal. Why does my tester, the T6, have a supercharger added to the 2.0-liter turbo? It adds power throughout the rev range, but it costs horsepower to run it. ![]() Volvo’s XC60s all use a 2.0-liter turbo-four in front-drive T5, all-wheel-drive T6, and T8 plug-in hybrid flavors. The XC60, a slightly smaller, nimbler and quicker people hauler than the XC90, comes in right on its big brother’s tail. ![]() So far this year, Volvo’s best-sellers are, in order, the XC90, XC60 and XC40 crossovers. ![]()
